Google had some big announcements regarding Android today. More than 300 million devices now run on the Android platform, with 850,000 new device activations daily – good for 250 percent year-on-year growth.

Google Senior Vice President, mobile and digital content, also announced in a blog post that the number of applications available in the Android Market have tripled from 150,000 last year to 450,000 this year, and more than 1 billion app downloads happen every month. Google surpassed 10 billion app downloads in December.

Twelve million of those activated devices are tablets, a number Rubin described as "not insignificant, but less than I'd expect it to be if you really want to win." While Android is the leading smartphone operating system, it trails far behind Apple, which sold more than 11 million tablets last quarter alone.
